hand-dyed burpees

These are hand-dyed Indian prefold diapers. I sew a strip of coordinating fabric down the center and top-stitch with a zigzag, triple, or decorative stitch. I use designer fabric, such as Moda, Robert Kaufman, Michael Miller, Lakehouse, Japanese imports.... The fabric placement may vary slightly from the picture.

What is an Indian prefold diaper?
Indian Prefolds are the most reliable, affordable and popular choice for families choosing to use cloth diapers. These diapers have been 'pre-folded' and sewn into 3 panels of differing thicknesses. These diapers are imported. Unlike the prefolds found at your local Walmart or Target, these diapers are 100% cotton with no non-absorbent polyester in the padding. They will stand up to years of abuse and be only softer for the wear. This is a product where quality matters, and these are the best you can buy. Pilling: Any pills that do happen to sneak-up on you will eventually release from your diapers with continued use. Or, they can be removed with a pill remover thingy. Each burp cloth measures approximately 13 x 17. Do not use fabric softener as this causes the diapers to repel liquids. Perfect size for burpees!

What dye do you use?
I use a fiber reactive dye; these dyes bond with the fiber at a molecular level, becoming chemically part of the fabric. This dye process produces a vibrant and bright color that is permanent and will not fade after repeated washings. I hand dye all the burpee rags in small batches to get a bright and even color. The color may vary slightly in each batch but they are all always very bright. I wash the burp rags twice after they are dyed to ensure there is not any bleeding, however, I still suggest washing in COLD with like colors.

How do I launder the burpees?
They may come to you flat, this is mostly due to ironing before sewing. All diapers are washed and dried twice prior to sewing.  After washing and drying, they will undergo a transformation and quilt up into a thick, soft, and very absorbent burpee. That quilty look is created by the way that the diaper shrinks when dried. Burpees dried on a line will not get the same look as if dried in the drier.
